One such sophisticated darknet market, Hydra, offered all that and more,” Chainalysis explained. Additionally, The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) enforces Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) measures to enhance transparency. The Travel Rule mandates transaction disclosures, aiding law enforcement in tracking illicit funds. Regulatory bodies leverage blockchain analytics to combat money laundering and fraud, strengthening global enforcement efforts.

Use Encryption For All Stored Data
Most buyers and sellers use the Tor network, which hides IP addresses and locations. Doing so makes it harder for authorities to identify who’s behind a purchase or a listing. Vendors often build up reputations through ratings and reviews, just like sellers on mainstream platforms. To reduce scams, many markets also use escrow systems, where the site holds the buyer’s payment until they confirm the item has been delivered. In fact, there are many more aggressive security tests we could have done, such as the rate limiting and the OWASP Top Ten.Footnote 7 But for ethical reasons, we figured we did not want to be a potential attacker.
How Complex Are Dark Web Marketplaces Currently?
We analyse 40 DWMs for the time period spanning from June 18, 2011 to January 31, 2021. Our dataset covers all major DWMs that have ever existed, as identified by the European Monitoring Centre, Europol, the World Health Organization, and independent researchers24,25,26. Our analysis focuses on Bitcoin – the most popular cryptocurrency both on DWMs27,28 and in the regulated economy29,30. We focus on two kinds of transactions, occurring (i) between the user and a DWM and (ii) between two users of the same DWM. The result is 40 distinct marketplace ego networks containing user-DWM and U2U transactions, whose typical structure is depicted in Fig.
Dark Web Markets
Even with the increase in law enforcement pressure, the dark web market still achieved a revenue of $2 billion in 2024. Therefore, as long as this dark part of the internet exists, these marketplaces will flourish and emerge. In general, our totals exclude revenue from non-crypto-native crime, such as traditional drug trafficking and other crimes in which crypto may be used as a means of payment or laundering. Such transactions are virtually indistinguishable from licit transactions in on-chain data, although law enforcement with off-chain information can still investigate these crimes using Chainalysis solutions. In cases where we’re able to confirm such information, we count the transactions as illicit in our data.
Darknet Marketplaces As A Hub For Ethical Innovations
TRM Labs assesses the event was likely an exit scam, though a covert law enforcement seizure cannot be ruled out. However, when a DNM collapses — especially a large and reputable market — its users typically migrate to the nearest available platform. For example, ASAP Market’s closure likely prompted its vendors and buyers to migrate to Abacus, as evidenced by a 20% increase in Abacus’s volume compared with the month before ASAP Market shut down. Furthermore, following Archetyp’s law enforcement seizure in June, 2025, many of its users flooded Abacus Market, leading to the latter’s largest ever monthly sales volume of USD 6.3 million in June 2025.
Range Of Available Products

In 2024, fraud shop inflows declined by 50% YoY, a sharp downturn from the last three years. When looking at crypto inflows to DNMs in 2024, the data indicate that wholesale drug purchases were dominant, averaging between 71 and 81% of this year’s total market share. For online pharmacies, wholesale purchases led in 2024, followed by large retail.
Not surprisingly, Bitcoin (BTC) remains the dominant currency in the markets we observed, despite its poor anonymity properties and easy traceability. On the other hand, Monero (XMR) has become a popular choice due to it being significantly more anonymity-focused than Bitcoin 2, 5. In practice, Monero is considered the best choice by the dark web community. With Bitcoin, buyers and vendors are advised to use mixers to avoid tracking and enhance their anonymity 18, 36. There are many markets that offer a variety of options (i.e. two or more currencies) to provide flexibility for users and vendors. The market usually has a real-time exchange rate for currency conversion, even though most item prices are shown in US dollars.

The dark web is designed in such a manner that it hides the identities and locations of its visitors. This extra privacy makes it much harder for authorities to track down who runs these markets and where they are located. For these reasons, most of these stores naturally like the dark web due to its protection. We are also seeing a continued trend vis-à-vis the types of assets involved in crypto crime. He recommends verifying market employees carefully, and to weed out law enforcement infiltration through barium meal tests. At publishing time there is no indication that Abacus has been taken down by law enforcement but this scenario is not to be ruled out yet.

These critical changes may not be perceived from macroscopic measures of the ecosystem as a whole. For instance, the typical net income of sellers is seemingly unaffected, as shown in Fig. 2a, where the overall ecosystem volume quickly recovers after market closures. This is an outcome of the ecosystem’s resilience, largely supported by the migration of users15.
The victims, who are common users, businesses, and even banks, who end up paying the price. From there, these products are then passed on to distributors, which are the dark web marketplaces in this context. On these marketplaces, they’re listed, sold, and promoted just like items on any e-commerce site.
The Role Of Monero In Darknet Transactions

Abacus Market’s exit underscores the ongoing instability of Western DNM landscape. Sustained law enforcement pressure has stymied marketplaces’ development, curtailed innovation and increasingly driven users toward independent vendor shops and encrypted communication platforms like Telegram. DEXs facilitate anonymous crypto-to-crypto swaps without identity verification, leveraging cross-chain bridges and privacy tools to obfuscate transactions. Some P2P enable off-ramping via cash and prepaid vouchers, bypassing AML compliance under claims of mere facilitation. Regulatory countermeasures, including blockchain analytics and the FATF’s Travel Rule, aim to trace illicit flows. However, enforcement inconsistencies highlight the ongoing struggle between financial privacy and regulatory oversight in combating cryptocurrency-enabled money laundering.
- In order to investigate the role of direct transactions between market participants, we now analyse the evolution of the S2S network, i.e., the network of the U2U transactions involving only sellers.
- We’re talking about even early access to unreleased music, leaked TV episodes, concert footage, and even popular video games before they officially drop.
- Many “trusted” sellers use fake reviews or steal reputations from shutdown markets.
- In this subsection, we explore information about financial security related to doing transactions while using the market.
- However, if we bring in the latest knowledge on CAPTCHA generation and breaking from the security community, these CAPTCHAs are all trivial to break.
- The marketplace supports multiple payment methods, including Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), and Cryptocheck.
Just as there are new entrants, the dark web has its veteran markets too, and Brian’s Club is one such market. Brian’s Club is one of the best place to buy stolen credit card info, including CVVs, dumps, and even full account packages without revealing your identity. In doing so, Pavlov is alleged to have facilitated Hydra’s activities and allowed Hydra to reap commissions worth millions of dollars generated from the illicit sales conducted through the site. Numerous vendors also sold hacking tools and hacking services through Hydra. Hacking vendors commonly offered to illegally access online accounts of the buyer’s choosing.
For example, in the screenshot below, an American vendor lists protonitazene powder, and advertises its uses as a counterfeit for oxycodone, also referred to as “M30” (i.e. 30 mg). Below is a screenshot from the Abacus Market website showing the range of items it sells, with drugs and chemicals representing the overwhelming majority of its products. Since 2021, Abacus Market’s revenue has increased substantially, and in 2024, it more than doubled, growing by 183.2% YoY. This increase may be due in part to the closures of top DNMs, the shift to the exclusive acceptance of XMR by other active markets, and delistings of XMR by popular centralized exchanges.
