Those who do not have access to these distribution modes have often pursued shifting and sometimes predatory street markets. The impact of the darknet has to be fully seen in this context, as one component of an evolving social-technical infrastructure for drug distribution and consumption may include harm-reduction advice such as drug-checking services 60. Cryptomarkets are part of an evolving trend where communities of PWUD adapt and develop technological systems to their ends.

Similar as for betweenness centrality, we report the results for the variant taking both direction and weighting into account as this provides the random walker with more context. Note that we found this variant of PageRank to indeed have the best performance. Some markets also offer legitimate goods and services, such as digital products and software. However, the vast majority of products and services sold on darknet markets are illegal or fraudulent. As discussed, there is lack of information about trends in these types of drug market, and despite the increasingly panicked tone of some recent media coverage a major question is whether cryptomarket research can shine a light on the reality of usage of these products. At the most general level, it is hoped that this work can further demonstrate that, with the appropriate limitations and nuances being included, cryptomarket digital trace analysis can be used as resource to understand wider trends in drug usage rates.
Detecting Vendors In The User Base
Among the 40 large DWMs under consideration, 17 participate in at least one transaction in either 2020 or 2021, while the remaining 23 closed before 2020. Notably, our dataset includes Silk Road (the first modern DWM)1, Alphabay (once the leading DWM)44, and Hydra (currently the largest DWM in Russia)12. Other general statistics about our dataset can be found in the Section S3. Overall, our study provides a first step towards the understanding of how users of DWMs collectively behave outside organised marketplaces.
Regarding profits, darknet vendors do not have to limit their trading to face-to-face interactions, and can instead sell drugs to a potentially worldwide customer base. The detection of stable U2U pairs in the full network is done by using an evolving activity-driven model31, which introduced a statistically-principled methodology to detect the network backbone against what is expected from a proper null model. If a U2U pair occurs significantly more than what expected from the null model, it is labeled as stable, otherwise it is labelled as non-stable, see Fig. The evolving activity-driven model is an appropriate methodology for large temporal networks32 and it is implemented in the Python 3 pip library TemporalBackbone45, where default parameter values have been used. As input parameter, we considered the full network, transactions from/to DWMs and U2U transactions between users (see Section S4). In the EU the evidence is similarly sparse, barring some limited ECMDDA secondary data collection. Novak et al. This result is not trivial because, although the classification induces a positive net income for sellers, it is performed on each market and the U2U network separately, while the median net income is computed based on all transactions made by an entity. In fact, when we compute the total net income for each seller, a considerable fraction (16%) has a negative net income because they spend in markets where they are not classified as sellers, or in the U2U network. Moreover, we find a change of trend between the seller and the buyer median net income time series which reflects the dominance of markets, as detailed in the next section. Then, after operation Bayonet, the number of sellers in all categories and multisellers significantly drops, as shown in Fig. Notably, the number of multisellers suffers the largest drop of \(-99\%\) by the end of the first quarter of 2018. Interestingly, while the other categories of sellers show signs of recovery relative to their previous levels, the number of multisellers remains low after that shock (see Supplementary Information Section S4). These insights help us understand why the dark web is increasingly attractive, not only to consumers of illicit drugs but to the people who supply them.
But more importantly, analyzing the forum data over time, we find evidence that attaining a high betweenness score comes before vendor success. This suggests that the proposed network-driven approach of modelling user communication might prove useful as an early warning signal for key player identification. Despite achieving the best vendor recall, topic engagement is only able to detect up to 2/3rd of the most successful vendors for current success and even fewer for future success. Thus, there may still be a significant number of successful vendors that are not detected by the activity indicators that may be included by network measures.
